Just one more

THIS is the last one, I promise. The sunburnt tourists in the foreground caught an enormous fish.

Paradise bungalows

This is a momentous occasion - accommodation that's worthy of a photo instead of a demolition order.

Enough with the sunsets, already

This is the last one, I promise.

Don Det

Today I took a mammoth bus ride to the southern tip of Laos and arrived in the afternoon in Si Phan Don - the "Four Thousand Islands" in the Mekong (there are in fact about three islands, but who's counting). I decided to stay on Don Det, a small island with only a few hours of generator-supplied electricity each evening and a wealth of bungalows, hammocks and lazy, lazy people. Highly recommended.

Savannakhet

There is one thing in Savannakhet. It's a dinosaur museum and it's closed.

Paksan

There is nothing in Paksan.

Vientiane

I made it to the capital finally. This is Patuxai, the Arc de Triomphe replica in the centre of Vientiane. I should really airbrush those damn tourists out of the photo (oh, the irony of it all).

What do you look like?!

The only way you'll get me to stop wearing my pink Thai fisherman trousers is by prizing them out of my cold, dead hands.

Passports, please

The age-old and time honoured game of looking at people's passport photos, then at their faces in disbelief.

Vang Vieng

South of Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng is a smaller and even more dilapidated town, built around an abandoned US airstrip. The road between the two towns is apparently plagued by armed highwaymen, but our journey passed without incident. In Vang Vieng, I went tubing on the river, (basically floating down the river in a tractor tyre innertube, drinking beer), and feasted on some of the best fresh baguettes outside France.
